Current waste management and disposal activities, although perfectly designed and managed, cause the emission of a large number of compounds; some very well-known and regularly monitored, but in most cases trace compounds and emerging substances in small amounts and at such low concentrations that they are sometimes neglected

Unfortunately, this undesired drawback of state-of-the-art technologies is expected to endure, despite the current trend towards the increasing use of recycling technologies: it is proven that recycling causes the uncontrolled emissions of a number of compounds of concern present in the products to be recycled and proper assessment of the related potential effects on the environment and on human health still needs to be carried out.

There is lack of evidence of health effects in populations living by waste management plants; studies are available but adequate individual exposure information and data on potential other causes for specific health issues are often missing. In many countries appropriate legislation is missing or, although it is present, it is not enforced.
This causes uncertainty and affects the attitude of populations towards waste management facilities; the Nimby approach is driving decision making processes all over the world and demagogy is producing a generic refusal of any kind of waste management plant by populations still believing in idealistic 100% recycling with no emissions.
It is now time to address these issues in a scientific way and produce reliable data on the effects of the different waste management activities and on the measures needed to prevent or minimize them. On Friday, October 4th at the Sardinia 2019 Symposium a Workshop will be devoted to this hot theme, with introductory presentations from distinguished scientists from Europe, Asia and North America.
