Edinburgh Business School has launched a specialist MBA in Oil and Gas Management, designed exclusively for those working in, or aspiring to enter, one of the largest, and most volatile, industry sectors

The Edinburgh Business School MBA is already the most popular in the world, with more than 11,850 students and 19,200 graduates in 166 countries worldwide. This new specialism cements the school’s reputation as a global provider of relevant and current management education programmes.

To qualify with the new specialist MBA students will undertake the Edinburgh Business School MBA, completing seven core courses, followed by four specialist courses:

  • Finance for the Oil and Gas Industry
  • Project Management for the Oil and Gas Industry
  • Strategic Planning for the Oil and Gas Industry and
  • Strategic Negotiation for the Oil and Gas Industry

Edinburgh Business School is the Graduate School of Business of Heriot-Watt University and offers the most flexible business education programmes in the world, allowing students to study independently at home, on campus in Edinburgh, Dubai or Malaysia, or through one of its 23 Learning Partners, or via a combination of study modes.

For the 2015/16 academic year the four specialist oil and gas courses will be available through a combination of self-study and five day intensive seminars at the school’s campuses in Edinburgh or Dubai, or with its Learning Partners in Nigeria and Trinidad.

From late 2016 the courses will be available in all study modes including self-study online.

Craig Robinson who has led the academic development at the Business School of the new specialism, says the programme will equip executives with a deeper understanding of the key issues facing the industry today:

“The specialist courses focus on areas of management that are of particular relevance to the oil and gas sector, while equipping professionals with the cutting edge business and management skills to progress both individually, and as decision-makers for their organisations.

“The specialist courses have been developed in conjunction with real world oil and gas industry experts, as well as our global teaching partners, to ensure we are providing the most relevant programme to help professionals manage the sector’s future,” he said.

A first cohort of MBA students and graduates working in the oil and gas sector studied the specialism in 2014 and endorsed the relevance and value of these new courses.

Miriam Nanyonga, senior accountant with CNOOC Uganda, a subsidiary of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, says the specialist courses gave her a much deeper understanding of the industry which is relatively young in

Uganda:

“As an executive in the industry aiming to grow my career, the courses cover most of the areas a top decision-maker should be knowledgeable about, especially strategic negotiation. This is vital as many highly expensive decisions need to be made and a wrong decision can result in disastrous consequences.

“I would highly recommend this specialism. For anyone wanting to join the industry and grow their careers, it’s the best decision they can ever make.”

Olubukola Fasoyin, Head of Technical Planning and acting Manager, Technical Planning and Risk, at Seplat Petroleum Development Company in Nigeria, had already been promoted as a result of his MBA studies before undertaking the oil and gas specialist courses:

“The specialism was timely. It prepared me to contribute to refocussing effort in my organisation to mitigate the effect of the drop in oil price.

Most beneficial for me was the combination of understanding the dynamics of the economics and politics of oil price volatility, practical training on oil and gas negotiation, and project claims management.”

The Edinburgh Business School MBA with Specialism in Oil and Gas Management extends the school’s expertise and experience in the oil and gas arena.

The school developed an MSc in Management for the Oil and Gas Industry exclusively for Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield services company, and this programme has been successfully running for nine years. In total more than 120 Schlumberger employees have graduated from the MSc programme and there are130 active students.

Edinburgh Business School also offers four other specialist MBA programmes in

  • Finance
  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing
  • Strategic Planning
